About Redbuds

The Inspiration

A spring walk in April 2017 at Great Falls, MD with two of my grandkids and their mother led to this print of the C&O Canal brightened by the pink blossoms of redbud trees. A harbinger of spring. The flowers precede the emergence of heart shaped leaves in late spring. In the Washington area, there are naturally occurring redbuds in the parks and wooded areas providing striking displays of pink blossoms similar to the blossoms of the Japanese cherry trees formally planted around Washington’s monuments and some neighborhoods.

The Project

“Redbuds” is a 21 color print. The prints were made on Stonehenge paper. Images are 12½” x 16¾” on 19” x 22” sheets. Speedball Acrylic Screen Printing Inks were used. Adobe Photoshop was used for developing the screenprinting plates. Nine prints are included in the edition. The project was completed in July 2017.

The Print Progression

The print progression showing the development of “Redbuds” can be seen in a series of five figures.
