About Dysfunction Junction

The Inspiration

“Dysfunction Junction” is a picture of the US Capitol. In thinking about a Washington DC picture, the capitol was an obvious choice. Think of a picture of the capitol sitting on Capitol Hill with bright sky and rising sun. But, the current functioning of the Congress belies that optimistic, hopeful image.

In this print, the capitol is depicted from a perspective looking down. The building sits small on the horizon under brooding skies and clouds. I hope to create a more positive print one day of a hopeful, majestic capitol. I just need the inspiration and motivation. Meanwhile, “Dysfunction Junction” will have to suffice.

The Print

“Dysfunction Junction” is a 10 color print. The prints were made on Stonehenge paper. Images are 17½” x 12” on 24” x 18” sheets. Speedball Acrylic Screen Printing Inks were used. Adobe Photoshop was used for developing the screenprinting plates. Six prints are included in the edition. The project was completed in April 2015.

Progression Series

The print progression showing the development of “Dysfunction Junction” can be seen in a series of four figures. The figure on the top left shows the first four colors and depicts the glum sky. On the right, the image shows the next four plates: dark green, red, green, and cream. In the second row on the left, one additional layer has been added, the grey layer, which creates shadows. These layers provide a minimal amount of color in an otherwise gloomy picture. The image on the bottom right side shows the final layer, black, which completes the image..
