About Dragon

The Inspiration

“Dragon” is based on a photograph of my grandson at six years old. I have made a screenprint of my grandkids annually. “Dragon” is the 2015 installment. Shepard Fairey’s 2008 Barack Obama “HOPE” poster inspired the design.

The Project

“Dragon” is an 11 color print, mostly shades of grey, 7 in all. The prints were made on Stonehenge paper. Images are 17½” x 12” on 24” x 18” sheets. Speedball Acrylic Screen Printing Inks were used. Adobe Photoshop was used for developing the screenprinting plates. Five prints are included in the edition. The project was completed in March 2016.

The Print Progression

The print progression showing the development of “Dragon” can be seen in a series of four figures. The figure on the left shows the first three colors creating the background and border. The next figure shows the print after the first four layers of grey were printed. The facial image is beginning to emerge. And, the title “Dragon” can be seen. The next image shows the print with the addition of three more layers of grey, seven in all. The face is complete at this point. In the figure on the right, the dark blue banner highlighting the print’s title, “Dragon”, appears. This was the final layer and marks the completed print.
